Jaw PainPlymouth Ann Arbor Oral & Facial Surgery MI 48170Anytime you have jaw pain it is essential to determine the reasons for it and treat it as soon as possible. If you fall for whatever reason and your jaw hurts from the blow, you should call us right away, so we can see you and determine if any broken bones need to be taken care of.

Suffering a blow to the jaw is no laughing matter and should be carefully monitored. The jawbone is what holds your teeth in place, and if you have hurt yourself, you could be putting your oral health in jeopardy. Even more concerning should be problems with biting, chewing or talking, which can mean there is another problem affecting your teeth.

When to Call our Office After a Blow to the Jaw

In general, we recommend you call us as soon as you can after suffering trauma to the jaw, even if you don’t have any pain immediately. Sometimes it takes a few days for the symptoms to appear.

When you come in, our surgeon will perform a visual evaluation of your jaw and will ask you to do different things such as opening and closing your mouth while placing his or her fingers by your ear canal. This will allow him or her to determine if something is not working correctly.

Sometimes our surgeons can place the jaw back in place with gentle manipulation. We will never force the muscles to their natural position. If you are diagnosed with a fracture, you may need surgery, which can include using wires to keep the jaw in place until it heals.

It is essential you call us immediately after hurting your jaw during a fall, even if you have no pain. If you let this go on without treatment, your jawbones will start growing in the wrong position, creating other problems.
